Research classification: Biophysical and clinical research
Compound overview
SS-31, also called elamipretide, is a synthetic mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide studied for interactions with mitochondrial membranes.
Published research
A 2020 biophysical study examined SS-31 binding to lipid bilayers and its effects on membrane electrostatics. The molecule has also been evaluated in randomized human clinical trials for mitochondrial conditions.
Evidence limitations
Mechanistic observations are not clinical outcomes. Results from proprietary clinical formulations cannot be applied to a separately manufactured research vial, and the strength of evidence varies by condition.
